There are few things that capture the spirit of an Italian summer quite like Ferragosto.
Celebrated on August 15, Ferragosto is one of Italy’s most beloved holidays—a time when families and friends slow down, gather together, enjoy a long meal, and make the most of the height of summer.
At its heart, Ferragosto is about something simple: spending time with the people you love and enjoying good food together.
And while you may not be able to make it to Italy this August, you can still bring a little bit of that Ferragosto spirit to your own table. Here at Mercato, we have everything you need to create an Italian-inspired summer gathering right at home.
What Is Ferragosto?
Ferragosto takes place every year on August 15 and has roots that go all the way back to ancient Rome.
The name comes from the Latin Feriae Augusti, or “Festivals of Augustus.” Emperor Augustus established a period of rest and celebration following the demanding agricultural season. Over time, the tradition evolved, and August 15 became associated with the Catholic Feast of the Assumption of Mary.
Today, Ferragosto is synonymous with the Italian summer.
For many Italians, it marks the heart of their summer holidays. Families may head to the coast, escape to the mountains, visit the countryside, or simply spend the day at home with friends and relatives.
Wherever they celebrate, one thing tends to remain the same:
There is food, there is family, and there is plenty of time to enjoy both.
A Day for Getting Together
Ferragosto isn’t necessarily about an elaborate celebration.
It’s about making time to be together.
In Italy, August 15 might mean a long lunch around a family table, a picnic in the countryside, a barbecue with friends, or a day spent at the beach followed by a shared meal.
Outdoor gatherings are particularly popular during the summer. Families pack food for picnics, fire up the grill, and bring along plenty of fresh seasonal ingredients.
The meal isn’t something to rush through.
It’s an opportunity to sit, talk, laugh, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company.
That’s one of the traditions we love most about Ferragosto at Mercato: the idea that food is better when it’s shared.
The Italian Table Starts With Antipasti
If you’re planning your own Ferragosto gathering, start with an Italian antipasto spread.
Antipasti are perfect for a relaxed summer gathering because there’s no need to sit down for a formal meal right away. Instead, guests can help themselves while everyone settles in and catches up.
Think:
- Prosciutto
- Mortadella
- Salami
- Provolone
- Mozzarella
- Fresh bread
- Olives
- Seasonal fruit
- Marinated vegetables
- Nuts and other small bites
At Mercato, our deli is filled with options for creating an Italian-inspired spread. Our selection of cured meats and cheeses can be served as a traditional antipasto or arranged into a beautiful charcuterie-style board.
And if you’d rather spend your Ferragosto enjoying your guests instead of preparing everything yourself, our Carne & Formaggio Platters can make putting together the table even easier. You can choose from a selection of deli meats and cheeses to create a platter suited to your gathering.
Fresh Pasta for the Main Event
No Italian gathering would be complete without pasta.
At Mercato, we make our fresh pasta daily, offering favourites such as spaghetti, rigatoni, fettuccini, ravioli, and tagliatelle.
For a Ferragosto meal, keep things simple.
Summer in Italy is about letting good ingredients shine. A fresh pasta dish with seasonal vegetables, herbs, olive oil, and a little Parmigiano-Reggiano can be all you need for a memorable meal.
Or go classic with a hearty pasta dish that can feed a crowd.
The beauty of an Italian gathering is that the table doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with quality ingredients, add good company, and let everyone take their time.
Don’t Forget the Bread
There’s something special about putting a basket of fresh Italian bread in the middle of the table and letting everyone tear off a piece.
At Mercato, our bakery has been perfecting breads and other Italian favourites for decades. From fresh baguettes and buns to other bakery staples, there’s always something to accompany the meal.
Use fresh bread for dipping into olive oil, serving alongside pasta, building sandwiches, or simply enjoying between courses.
Because in Italy, bread has a way of disappearing from the table surprisingly quickly.
Keep Summer Produce at the Centre
Ferragosto falls right in the middle of Italy’s summer, when fresh produce plays an important role in meals and gatherings.
Think ripe tomatoes, fresh herbs, seasonal fruit, crisp vegetables, and simple salads.
You don’t need to do much to great ingredients. A little olive oil, salt, and fresh herbs can turn seasonal produce into something worthy of the centre of the table.
Our produce section makes it easy to pick up fresh ingredients to complement your Ferragosto menu, while our Market carries pantry staples, olive oils, spices, spreads, and other ingredients to help complete your meal.
And Then There’s Dessert
After a long Italian meal, there’s always room for something sweet.
Ferragosto is the perfect excuse to bring out an assortment of Italian desserts and let everyone choose their favourite.
At Mercato, our bakery offers traditional treats including cannoli, pastries, cookies, and cakes. And when the summer heat calls for something cold, our gelato is an easy way to finish the meal on a refreshing note.
Pair dessert with an espresso, sit back, and let the conversation continue.
That’s the Ferragosto way.
You Don’t Have to Be in Italy to Celebrate Ferragosto
One of the best things about Italian traditions is that they can travel.
You don’t need a villa in Tuscany or a beach on the Amalfi Coast to enjoy Ferragosto. You simply need a table, some great food, and people you want to share it with.
Set up a long table in the backyard. Invite your family and friends. Put out an antipasto platter. Serve fresh pasta. Open something refreshing to drink. Bring out the bread, fruit, and dessert.
Then slow down.
Don’t worry about getting everyone in and out of the house. Don’t rush through the meal. Let dinner stretch into the evening.
That’s what Ferragosto is really about.
